Wesley Hill May, 74, of Woodstock Road, East Woodstock, died Thursday, (January 4, 2001) at the University of Mass. Medical Center in Worcester, MA. Wesley was the son of the late Stuart and Marguerite (Bosworth) May. Born May 20, 1926, Wesley was a lifelong resident of East Woodstock. At age 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, being assigned to the USS LCI 554, which left the Americas and participated in the liberation landings of Normandy and Southern France. LCI 554 was in the first wave of large infantry landing ships to land on Omaha Beach on D-Day, a memory that never left him. In 1951, he married Sara Korswig, and in time they had four sons. He was a member of the Muddy Brook Fire Department, and a member of the Putnam Fish and Game club. In the 1960's, he operated "Wes May's Sport Shop," selling mainly fishing and hunting gear. Many may remember having bought items marked, "a Wes May special." Of a careful and philosophical nature, he enjoyed working in the fields and woodlots of the family farm. Hewas an excellent fly fisherman, enjoyed bird hunting and deer hunting, and fly tying. All his life, Wes was an avid outdoorsman and conservationist, displaying a deep affection for wildlife and respect for the environment. Wes valued Yankee practicalityand dedication to family, and had a wonderfully dry sense of humor. He is survived by his wife, Sara May; and his children and their spouses, ... ; a brother, Richard and Gail May of Vernon; sister, Sandra May of Amston; and four grandsons and a granddaughter. A memorial service will be Sunday, at 2 p.m. at the East Woodstock Congregational Church, past Woodstock Road, East Woodstock. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made in his memory to the MuddyBrook Fire Department, East Woodstock, CT 06244; and to the Woodstock Emergency Medical Services, South Woodstock, CT 06267.
